Differentiating Factors

Strength of your profile can be very well measured when we compare you to your applicant pool. For example if I compare you with another power industry professional, perhaps a manager, what do you think are the 3 differentiating factors? Is it that you received a quick promotion? Or you were handling a lot of responsibilities? A caveat here would be to separate out your Job-Description and your achievements, some aspirants tend to mix them.

Leadership

In your role as a power-sector manager did you drive projects on your own? Did you motivate a de-motivated team? Did you face a crises situation? Did you take initiative and did good work for client? These are the examples you would have to weave in your essays.

Goal Clarity

Yes you have done a lot. Dealt in technical and commercial issues, you are well aware of resource utilization, cost analysis, technical aspects, deviation etc. But, in a world where 1000s of applicants are applying to B-schools every year, an applicant's goal clarity is of paramount importance. Given your current achievements, what are your long term goals and in line with these what are your post-MBA short term goals?

Have you given a sincere thought to these questions? If not you should because they would be a part of your MBA essays/interviews for sure.

GMAT

There is no GMAT cut-off as such put by B-schools. Higher the better is the general thumb rule. Asian applicants esp Indians tend to have high GMAT scores. You can get an idea about B-school's GMAT expectations by looking at class profile of last year's admits, where in they give Average GMAT score for last year's intakes.

Hobbies

Seems like a strong point in your profile, expand on one of them for sure in your essays.

Thanx for your reply Ivyctor. That was very helpful. However, I still have some ambiguity whether low marks in 10th & 12th will negate my profile, and if that is not the case, whether job quality and the experience gained are the only determining factors for selection.
With this profil, what are my realistic chances after getting a good score in GMAT?

No they are not the only factors. Work experience, Academics, extra-curriculars activities such as hobbies, event management, NGO Work if any; all these factors carry different weightages.

If you are worried about your bad academic performance in past, then get an awesome GMAT score and it will take care of the academic part.
