First thank you everyone here for sharing their stories and experience and the helpful advice that you guys provide.

Now getting to the precise information that I am seeking-
I graduated in 2006 with 3.78 GPA from Concord University, Athens, WV with accounting and finance major. Since then, I have been working in IT firm as a business analyst. I am interested in finance / accounting; but when I talk to few folks they say that I should rather pursue graduate degree in IT or take up a graduate course in finance (like ms in finance), rather than MBA. They advise that IT should be my focus and not finance; further, they said that since I have been away from finance, graduate programs in finance would be more beneficial (i.e. if I really wanted finance). So should I not really think about MBA? If I want to switch careers from IT to finance, would a graduate program in finance be better or an MBA in finance. I be 30 this august, would next year be too late? Is there a chance for this year (I have not taken my GMAT or GRE yet).
Please, please help!![/list]

Well, there's no clear right answer to should I do an MS or an MBA. The question is what is right for YOU???

And to do that, you need to think first about the difference between an MS in finance and an MBA. An MS is essentially a TECHNICAL degree, whereas an MBA is one in MANAGEMENT. Sooooo, what that means is that if you love the number crunching, the theory, the back office stuff, then an MS might be more your line. An MBA is more focused on general management, so it's designed to groom LEADERS. In the finance industry, very often an MS or an MBA can lead you to similar paths however. So, think about what you want!!

Are you more the go-to deal-making suit-wearing, charming dude who wants to be the leader and front man, or are you the number wizard who comes up with all the ideas?? Either one could be good for you. And in fact since both might lead you to your goals (and to check this, I suggest looking up what people in your ultimate target position have done... troll through LinkedIN and stuff), nothing is stopping you from applying to some MS and some MBA programs.

Jon posted an excellent reply on mba vs ms!

I would only add on the age question that there is age bias in the application process, so yes I would apply this year if you are talking about full time mba programs. And you still have plenty of time for the gmat and essays--you will likely be looking at Round 2 which is fine.

Keep in mind that if you are not successful with mba programs this year, there are more part-time and executive mba options than in times prior, so these are possibilities as well down the road.

Thank you Jon and Alex!

I am still preparing for my GMAT; so Fall 2012 is out of the question for either a MS or MBA.

I will try to take GMAT and apply for Fall 2013.

Do you have any inputs on the new GMAT format (IR section)?

Thanks!
