Value of m

by gmatblrind » Sun Oct 11, 2009 9:09 am
What is the value of m?
a) 8m^2 = 8^2m
b) m is an integer

Well solving statement a value of m would be 8, so the answer is A

But the OA is E, can someone explain

How did you solve the value of m using statement 1?

8m^2=8^2m

Dividing both sides by m
8m=8^2

Dividing both sides by 8 gives
m=8

is it (8^2)m or (8^2m)
if its 8^2m we definitely cant find m!

To be more precise, is the expression:

8 * m^2 = 8^2 * m

@gmatblrind,
The answer should not be 'A'. If you use the following way to solve the expression, you'll defnitely get 'E'
8m^2 = 8^2 m
8m^2 - 64m = 0
8m (m - 8) = 0
Therefore m = 0,8
