The OA is B.
I don't understand this DS question. Can any expert explain it please? Thanks.
(1) The spouse received 1/2 of the sum of the estate and the oldest child received 1/4 of the reminder.
Share of spouse = 1/2 of 200,000 = $100,000;
Share of the oldest child = 1/4 of (200,000 - 100,000) = $25,000.
Amount left after their shares = 200,000 - 100,000 - 25,000 = $75,000.
We do not know the division of $75,000 between the youngest two children. Insufficient.
(2) Each of the two younger children received $12500 more than the oldest child and $62500 less than the spouse.
Say the oldest child received $x, the spouse received $y.
Thus, the share of each of the youngest children = $(12,500 + x) = $(y - 62,500)
From $(12,500 + x) = $(y - 62,500), we get x -y = -75000 ---(1)
We know that the sum of shares of the spouse and the three children = 200,000
Thus, y + x + 2(12,500 + x) = 200,000
This gives y + 3x = 175,000 ---(2)
Upon solving (1) and (2), we get x = $25,000.
Thus, the share of each of the youngest children = $(12,500 + x) = $(12,500 + 25,000) = $37,500. Sufficient.
The correct answer:
B
Hope this helps!
