Pam and Ed are in a line to purchase tickets. How many people are in the line?

(1) There are 20 people behind Pam and 20 people in front of Ed.

(2) There are 5 people between Pam and Ed.


I had picked E which is incorrect but option A, B and D are ruled out. For C I had consider two situation where Pam is ahead of Ed and in second Ed is ahead of Pam. so in both the case answer will be different so the correct answer should be E.

Please correct me if I am wrong

1+2) 20 - Ed - 5 - Pam - 20 Total :47

IMO E
Together,

case I:

1,2,3,....20,Ed, 22,23,24,25,26, Pam, 28,....(next 20) Total: 47

Case II:

1,2,3,....14, Pam, 16, 17,18,19,20, Ed, 22,23,24,25,...35: Total: 35

Two answers. Hence, insufficient.

We are asked how many ppl are in line.

Case 1: Insufficient.
We know 20 ppl behind PAM and 20 ppl in front of ED but we do not know the positions of Pam and Ed.

Case 2: Insufficient.
There are 5 ppl between PAM and ED.

Consider 1 and 2 together.
You will know how many people were in the line.

Don't know order of P and E and how many people are between P and E. Insufficient.

(2) There are 5 people between Pam and Ed.

...P.....E...

Don't know order of P and E and how many people are between P and E. Insufficient.

Combine 1 and 2.
...P.....E... - 20 people behind P, 5 between P and E, 20 people in front of E. Total = 20 + 20 - 5 = 35
...E.....P... - 20 people behind P, 5 between P and E, 20 people in front of E. Total = 21 + 6 + 20 = 47

Two different values. Hence Insufficient.

The original poster is correct that the answer is E. As several people have noted, either 47 or 35 could be the answer.
