Percentage question

by sudi760mba » Wed Aug 20, 2008 11:28 pm
Hi,

Is there a quick methodology in doing this kind of sum?

Diana bought a stereo for $530 which was the retail price plus a 6percent sales tax.

1.06x=$530
x = $530/1.06
x=?

I could probably do $53000/106 but it looks like a little more tedious. This is the kind of problem i struggle with in terms of doing the actual calculation or mental math.

Think about the additional 6% and the effect it had on the original number. When I look at 530, I think 6% of $500 is $30. 500 + 30 = 530. No quick methodology, just common sense.
