math difficulty level

by saadiagha » Mon Jan 14, 2013 12:03 pm
hey guys

just wanted to ask a very general questions, I hope this is the correct forum to post it in, but I was going through the OG quant review, and found that the first 80 questions were quite easy (barring a few difficult ones of course). However, the next 70 questions seem to be much more difficult, including more integration in the word problems, and more gaps in the questions. I was wondering if anyone knew what 'level' questions the first 80 are, compared to the last part of the book?

The question are divided relatively evenly across easy, medium and hard. They profess (for the most part) in difficulty levels.

Good question -- take a look at the quant chart on this page (https://www.mba.com/the-gmat/gmat-scores ... means.aspx). You could do some general back of envelope math (# of question / # number of questions in book to get to the percentile ranking.)

The bigger thing I'd offer/suggest is for you to find a good practice test or two that will allow you to get rich diagnostics to understand your performance and where to focus going forward.

Ping me with more thoughts/questions.

Hey Saadiagha,

The last thing that's worth mentioning here is that difficulty is, to some extent, a relative issue. I have a lot of students who become really obsessed with solving only difficult questions, and then they continue to make silly arithmetical/technique errors on easier questions. So as other instructors have suggested, make sure that you're doing questions that are relevant to what you'll see on the test. If you're scoring a 600, focus on questions from 500-700, not 700-800, until you are NAILING the questions in the correct range. Then you can move on to harder ones.

Also, don't become preoccupied with difficulty while studying/taking the test. If it's hard for you, it's a hard question!
