Set question

by mathewmithun » Wed Jun 20, 2012 1:31 am
I came accross this question while practicing:

S is a set of integers such that
i) if a is in S, then -a is in S, and
ii) if each of a and b is in S, then ab is in
S.
Is -4 in S?
(1) 1 is in S.
(2) 2 is in S.

OAA I went with C.

Is -4 in S?

(1) 1 is in S.
(2) 2 is in S.
Statement 1: As 1 is in S, -1 is also in S. But we cannot extend the logic from this point.

Not sufficient

Statement 2: As 2 is in S, -2 is also in S.
Now, 2 and -2 are in S.
Hence, (2)*(-2) = -4 is also in S.

Sufficient

The correct answer is B.

If 2 is in set that means even -2 is in the set( rule 1)
Now that means 2*-2= -4 is also in set( rule 2)

You are sure that b is wrong???
