have done any mistake in posting this thread.I havent recieved a single reply.request you to please contribute.Also let me if these problems are of which range,like 600-700,or 700+ type questions.

9) A certain company that sells only cars and trucks reported that revenues from car sales in 1997 were down 11 percent from 1996 and revenues from truck sales in 1997 were up 7 percent from 1996. If total revenues from car sales and truck sales in 1997 were up 1 percent from 1996, what is the ratio of revenue from car sales in 1996 to revenue from truck sales in 1996?

(A) 1: 2
(B) 4: 5
(C) 1: 1
(D) 3: 2
(E) 5: 3


Soln :
X : Car revenues

Y : Truck revenues

T : Total revenues

X + Y = T ( as per 1996 rates)

0.89 X + 1.07 Y = 1.01 T ( as per 1997 rates)

We are supposed to find x/y ( ratio of car sales over truck sales revenues)

we will get x/y : (1/2)

7) Is x < y?
(1) The ratio of x to y is 7/9
(2) xy>0


St 1: x = 0.78Y

Insufficient. If Y is negative then X will be greater than Y. If Y is positive, then X is less than Y. So insuuficient.

St 2 : XY > 0

Nothing much could be derived out of this.

Combining, again inconsistent answers comeout.

2) Professor Vasquez gave a quiz to two classes. Was the range of scores fro the first class equal to the range of scores for the second class?
(1) In each class, the number of students taking the quiz was 26, and the lowest score in each class was 70.
(2) IN each class, the average (arithmetic mean) score on the quiz was 85


Range : Highest data point - lowest data point

St 1 : we know the lowest score as 70 . But no idea about highest. SO Not Sufficient.

St 2: Mean of each class 85. Again No info about highest /lowest scores. Not sufficient

Combining both : No data regarding highest score.

I think you should post your questions individually, so we can follow up the answers. All in one is mixed up, I can't follow the answers since we could find n answers for n different questions.

Hey guys and gals,

This is my first post on this forum but I've been reading it for a while. I was just wondering where did you find the questions you posted and as the thread creator asked what is the "level" of those questions ? 600-700 or more like 700-750ish or else?

1) The function f is defined for each positive three-digit integer n by f(n) = 2x3y5z , where x, y and z are the hundreds, tens, and units digits of n, respectively. If m and v are three-digit positive integers such that f(m)=9f(v), them m-v=?
(A) 8
(B) 9
(C) 18
(D) 20
(E) 80
f(n) = 2^x * 3^y * 5^z
Now, m and v are three-digit positive integers, so let m = 100a + 10b + c and let v = 100p + 10q + r
f(m) = 9 * f(v)
2^a * 3^b * 5^c = 3² * 2^p * 3^q * 5^r
2^a * 3^b * 5^c = 2^p * 3^(2 + q) * 5^r
Now equating exponents on both sides, we get,
a = p so hundreds digit is the same,
b = 2 + q, so tens digit differs by 2,
c = r, so units digit is the same.

Since tens digit differs by 2 between the two and the first and last digit remain the same,
the difference between the two numbers is 2 * 10 i.e 20. So, m - v = 20

The correct answer is D.

Q3. In the figure shown above, two identical squares are inscribed in the rectangle. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 18 by squareroot2, then what is the perimeter of each square?
(A) 8 by squareroot2
(B) 12
(C) 12 by squareroot2
(D) 16
(E) 18
The figure looks like in the attached image.

Perimeter = 18 × √2, which implies 2 × (length + width) = 18√2
or Length + Width = 9√2

Let side of square = a implies diagonal of the square = a√2
Now, length of rectangle = 2 × diagonal of square = 2a√2
width of rectangle = diagonal of square = a√2

Length + Width = 9√2 implies 2a√2 + a√2 = 9√2
3a√2 = 9√2 or a = 3 or side of the square = 3
So, perimeter of the square = 3 × 4 = 12

The correct answer is B.

Q4. A certain computer program generates a sequence of numbers a1, a2, ... , an such that a1 = a2 = 1 and ak = ak-1 + 2ak-2 for all integers k such that 3 ≤ k ≤ n. If n > 6, then a7 = ?

A. 32
B. 43
C. 64
D. 100
E. 128
a1 = 1
a2 = 1
a3 = a2 + 2a1 = ! + 2(1) = 3 (as ak = ak-1 + 2ak-2)
a4 = a3 + 2a2 = 3 + 2 = 5
a5 = a4 + 2a3 = 5 + 2(3) = 11
a6 = a5 + 2a4 = 11 + 2(5) = 21
a7 = a6 + 2a5 = 21 + 2(11) = 21 + 22 = 43

The correct answer is B.

Another approach: a1, a2, and a3 are odd. So, all the numbers in the sequence will be odd as
ODD + 2 * ODD = ODD
B is the only option, which is odd. So, B is the correct answer.

5) At a certain food stand, the price of each apple is $0.4 and the price of each orange is $0.6. Mary selects a total of 10 apples and oranges from the food stand, and the average (arithmetic mean) price of the 10 pieces of fruit is $0.56. How many oranges must Mary put back so that the average price of the pieces of fruit that she keeps is $0.52?
(A) 1
(B) 2
(C) 3
(D) 4
(E) 5
Let no. of apples = x and no. of oranges = y
Then x + y = 10...equation 1
(0.40x + 0.60y)/10 = 0.56 or 4x + 6y = 56 or 2x + 3y = 28....equation 2
Solving equation 1 and 2, we get x = 2, y = 8

Now let us assume that Mary puts back P oranges. So, the new average is:
{0.60(8 - P) + 0.40 * 2}/(10 - P) = 0.52
(5.6 - 0.60P) = 5.2 - 0.52P
0.4 = 0.08P
P = 5, which means Mary puts back 5 oranges.

The correct answer is E.

1/(√(n + 1) - √(n)) = {√(n + 1) + √(n)}/{√(n + 1) - √(n)} * {√(n + 1) + √(n)}
= {√(n + 1) + √(n)}/{(n + 1) - n}
= {√(n + 1) + √(n)}

The correct answer is E.

10) What is the median number of employees assigned per project for the projects at Company Z?

(1) 25 percent of the projects at Company Z have 4 or more employees assigned to each project.
(2) 35 percent of the projects at Company Z have 2 or fewer employees assigned to each project.
Both the statements separately are NOT SUFFICIENT to answer the question.

Next combine both the statements: (1) covers the possibilities when there are 4 or more employees in each project, and (2) covers the possibilities when there are 2 or fewer employees in each project. This implies that no. of employees not covered for each project is 3. Therefore, 100% - (25% + 35%) = 40% of the projects have 3 employees assigned to each project. So, combining the statements is SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is C.

8) For each landscaping job that takes more than 4 hours, a certain contractor charges a total of r dollars for the first 4 hours plus 0.2r dollars for each additional hour or fraction of an hour, where r>100. Did a particular landscaping job take more than 10 hours?

(1) The contractor charges a total of $288 for the job
(2) The contractor charges a total of 2.4r dollars for the job.
Let us assume that the total no. of hours to complete the job = T

(1) r + 0.2r * (T - 4) = 288
But we do not know that value of r, so we cannot find T; NOT sufficient.

(2) r + 0.2r * (T - 4) = 2.4r
0.2T = 2.2 implies T = 11; SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is B.
