Bony and Charles

by sanju09 » Wed Feb 18, 2009 3:21 am
Bony and Charles were each paid x dollars in advance to do a certain job together. Bony worked on the job for 10 hours and Charles worked 2 hours less than Bony. If Charles gave Bony y dollars of his payment so that they would have received the same hourly wage, what was the dollar amount, in terms of y, that Bony was paid in advance?

A. 5 y

B. 6 y

C. 9 y

D. 8 y

E. 4 y

Hourly wage of Bony = x/10
Hourly wage of Charles = x/8

For their hourly wages to be equal, Charles gave y dollars to Bony

=> (x+y)/10 = (x-y)/8
=>x = 9y
