Difficult assumption question!!!

by [email protected] » Tue Mar 06, 2012 8:15 pm
7. Since the new publisher took control, a news magazine's covers have featured only models and movie stars. Previously, the covers had displayed only politicians, soldiers, and business leaders. A leading gossip columnist claimed that the changes made the magazine relevant again. However, many newspaper editorials disagreed and suggested that the new publisher is more interested in boosting sales than in reporting important news events.

Which of the following is an assumption necessary for the argument made by the gossip columnist's opponents?

A] The charitable activities of models and movie stars often focus public attention on pressing problems.

B] Final authority for choosing the cover subject of the magazine lies with the publisher.

C] A magazine can boost sales while highlighting the coverage of important world leaders.

D] Some of the movie stars featured are now running for political office.

E] Magazine issues with models or movie stars on the covers are purchased at a rate more than three times greater than is the case with issues featuring politicians on the covers.
OA given is B.
iT came down to the options B and E, I chose E and got it wrong...

Could you please help me in understanding both the options...

Thank You...

--> "the new publisher is more interested in boosting sales than in reporting important news events."

this comment is directed at the new publisher and his motive of boosting the sales. hence B is more apt than D as if we negate it conclusion just goes apart. Also we dont know anything about the figure three times.

B goes more straight to damage the conclusion than D.

I am not sure if anybody gave a sufficient reason (E) is not the answer. I'll go ahead and do my best :).

The opponents claim that the publisher only wants to boost sales.

(E) only tells us that the magazine is selling more. So it turns out that sales increased, but that doesn't necessarily mean that implicates the publisher in wanting to boost sales. Maybe the publisher only wanted to be relevant - maybe he or she has a penchant for feathered fedoras:) - but we cannot directly blame them, esp. if the front cover is not even their decision (but rests with someone else in the firm).

Therefore the best answer is (B) because it directly attributes responsibility for the change in cover designs to the publisher.

Hope that helps :)

In case of E, use the negation technique. What is purchases haven`t tripled, but instead doubled? It can`t be an assumption.

Since the new publisher took control, a news magazine's covers have featured only models and movie stars. Previously, the covers had displayed only politicians, soldiers, and business leaders. A leading gossip columnist claimed that the changes made the magazine relevant again. CONCLUSION:However, many newspaper editorials disagreed and suggested that the new publisher is more interested in boosting sales than in reporting important news events.

Which of the following is an assumption necessary for the argument made by the gossip columnist's opponents?

A] The charitable activities of models and movie stars often focus public attention on pressing problems. OOS out of scope: charitable activities.

B] Final authority for choosing the cover subject of the magazine DOES NOT lies with the publisher. Correct AO. Test with Negation test. Negation shatters the CONCLUSION marked above.

C] A magazine can boost sales while highlighting the coverage of important world leaders. NR: Not Relevant to Conclusion. Conclusion speaks abt boosting sales vs reporting important news events.

D] Some of the movie stars featured are now running for political office. OI: outside information. Also negation doesnt affect the conclusion.

E] Magazine issues with models or movie stars on the covers are purchased at a rate more than three times greater than is the case with issues featuring politicians on the covers. Too specific about sales. Doesnt say anything abt new publisher's role.
