Scientists hope that studying the huge thunderclouds revealed in recent pictures of Jupiter will help them unravel one of the strangest mysteries of the solar system: which is why planetary winds are stronger the further a planet is from the Sun.

A. which is why planetary winds are stronger the further a planet is from the Sun
B. which is, why planetary winds are stronger if a planet is further from the Sun
C. why planetary winds are stronger the further a planet is from the Sun
D. why, the further a planet is from the Sun, its planetary winds are stronger

Ideally none of the options is correct since, given the context, the right word to be used should be 'farther' and not 'further'.

But fitting 'farther' in the options, option C looks the most promising.

btw: what is the source of this problem?

Further should be Farther... C looks promising to me..
