The reason children play is because they enjoy learning about the world around them.


a) is because they enjoy learning about the world around them

b) is because to learn about the world around them, they must enjoy

c) is that they enjoy learning about the world around them

d) that they enjoy learning about the world around them

e) is because they find joy in learning about the world around them.

When a man appeared in the village of Artigat in the summer of 1556 and presented himself as Martin Guerre, only a few locals suspected whether he assumed the identity of the man who had disappeared eight years earlier.

"The reason... is because" is idiomatically incorrect (and also redundant). The correct usage is "the reason... is that." Thus, the only idiomatically correct answer is C.

"suspected whether" is also idiomatically incorrect / redundant. If there is suspicion, we already know that there is uncertainty between two possibilities. The correct construction is "they suspected THAT he had done something," so the correct answer is E.
