Gmat score 700.. worried

by nitin.joy » Thu Dec 11, 2008 1:23 am
Hi,

I have just given Gmat and got a score of 700 (Quant 50 verbal 35) overall 90 percentile.

Background: Mechanical engineer from Delhi college of engineering
Work experience : 5 years by 2010, the time when i want to apply
GPA:3.7
good co-curricular activities, played national level in table tennis
part time: Working for a NGO since 2001, 7 years now
Full time: working as an assistant manager in a intellectual property (patents) domain in Pangea3, an LPO ranked number one in US and located in mumbai.

I have ample time, approx 9 months, before i apply to colleges. and i expect to improve my professional work experience even more (as i m expecting a sureshot promotion by july next year).

Now i just wanna know that is 700 a score worth to apply to top ten B schools, or shud i give an another attempt to improve my score. else, should i focus on the application considering this score to be on the bottom line atleast and dont be pessimistic about the same

I got very disappointed with the score as i was getting 730 - 740 in most of the prep tests.

Please advice.

Hi N,
First of all, 700 is a great score - so don't feel too bad. But as you probably know, candidates from india are in one of the most competitive applicant pools. Mean scores for Indian applicants are usually several points higher than the school averages.

If you think you can score 40-50 points higher, than you might want to consider retaking the test. However, if you feel you can use that time (or money) more productively somewhere else (in improving your candidacy), then stick with the score.

Let us know if you have any more questions.

Regards,

N
