Best MBA programs for the tech industry?

by Steve105 » Sat Jul 14, 2012 7:47 am
Hello,

I was looking to apply to a full time MBA program to enter next year's fall class. I was born and raised in Northern California and would love to continue my marketing career in Silicon Valley. I was curious about what are the best programs if I want to stay in the tech industry. Ideally, I'd like to go to school in California, but am open to the idea of elsewhere. Obviously Stanford and Berkeley come to mind, but I think those might be a longshot for me. I also looked into UCLA and USC but was curious how much help a network in Southern California would help out in Silicon Valley. UC Davis and UC Irvine also caught my eye, but their prestige isn't nearly as great as the schools listed above.

My academics are fine, but I feel that my work background has been a bit spotty largely due to the recession making the job market so bleak. IE: there's a gap of 6 months between jobs because of a layoff.

Here's my background.

Undergrad: University of California, Davis. Majored in Managerial Economics. 3.54 GPA.
GMAT: 710

0.5 years of experience doing sales as a retail banker
1.5 years of experience in marketing in the tech industry.

Thanks in Advance!

Obviously Stanford and Berkeley, as you mentioned. Those are probably the top schools. Sloan for its connection to MIT (though to be honest they don't necessarily turn out that many tech people, in part cause they seem to want to move away from their "oh hey, we do robotics" stereotype). Other schools to look into would be Anderson as you mentioned, also Tepper, Austin, Georgia Tech...

But there are plenty of other schools, and to be honest Tech has become so ubiquitous that there aint a business program in the world you cant go to. If you want to dig deeper, I suggest you look at two specific published statistics of Alumni (which most schools publish) and that is the industry or where people come from, the industry into which they enter. Also a good idea to look at the top 5 or ten hiring companies in the school you are interested in. It will give you a preeetty good insight to realistically where folks come from and where they go to for each business school.

Finally finally, keep in mind that even if you get into a good school without a particular Tech focus, if its a good school, you can still do amazingly well upon graduating.

Hope this helps, dude.
