life-style is plural or singular

by welcome » Fri Jan 23, 2009 2:17 am
Here is a part of question..

(A) the inhabitants of the Lofotens have evolved folkways and a life-style that bring warmth

(B) the inhabitants of the Lofotens have evolved folkways and a life-style that brings warmth

Answers is A, but IMO it should be B as life-style is singular ans it should be used with the verb bringS, not bring.

Will appeciate the explanation.

folkways AND a life-style makes it plural
and hence it requires a plural verb (bring)

Cheers!

Great catch Manoj.. The GMAT always tries to trick people with those types of questions and it's important to pay attention to the "And".

But that refers to lifestyle isn't it?

I read somewhere that , that and which always refers to immediate noun. In this case , lifestlye is a noun.

plural

two singular nouns separated by AND make a plural which is the case in this question.

Mango and apple "ARE" fruits
Mango and apple "IS" fruit

I hope that clarifies.

Cheers,
Satish.

Hey guys

In this question "a lifestyle" seems to indicate that we need to use the singular "brings" .. But the Ans is A which uses the plural bring..

Does that mean we can use the plural form blindly whenever we use "and"...

IMO B

I have read the following rule

the use of the word that concentrates on the noun preceding it ie lifestyle... so the verb shud be singular....

this is damn confusing man....we need expert advice..

i think it should be B

(A) the inhabitants of the Lofotens have evolved folkways and a life-style that bring warmth

(B) the inhabitants of the Lofotens have evolved folkways and a life-style that brings warmth

its true that when we use "AND" the verb should be plural but not in this case.
if the sentence was,
"the inhabitants of the Lofotens have evolved folkways and life-style that"
then we can use plural verb. note that "a" is removed.
if we are using "a", then "that" for sure is modifying life-style
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!

am for A.

the inhabitants of the Lofotens have evolved Z that bring warmth

X: folkways (plural)
Y: a life style (singular)

Z=X and Y (plural)

so we need plural "bring"

i think "life-style" here means lifestyles of the inhabitants.. i mean if this is the case then it should be A.. but if all the inhabitants have the same lifestyle then B should be correct.. IMO it would depend on the question and situation..
"that" can refer to life-style..but it depends on the context of the complete question.. Is it possible for u to post the complete question so that it can give us the actual situation for which we are applying the rules??

any suggestions??
