Take the test Yes or No

by mikles » Thu May 16, 2013 3:25 am
Hi guy's,

I have been studying for the GMAT on and off for the past 4 months. My goal was to study really on a consistent basis but was unable to due to work related issues.
Two months ago I scheduled my exam for May 22. I am now 5 days away from the exam, but I am facing an issue and that's the reason I seek advice. First of all I am aiming at a score between 680 and 720 since this is the benchmark for the programs I am targeting. Unfortunately due to the irregularity of my preparation I am only going to take my first prep test tomorrow. My feeling is that at this stage I am somewhere on the mid to low 500's right now, of course I am going to validate that tomorrow, but the real issue is that the exam is on the 22 and I don't feel near prepared.
Question: come the 22 regardless of feeling prepared should I take the GMAT ? It is payed for, and I won't get any money back at this stage.
At what prep tests scores should I start to feel confident that my target exam score is reachable?
Thanks,
M

The GMAT is not really a test where very many people make a huge jump on test day itself. If you are scoring in the mid-500s you should probably expect to score 600 or less on test day.

To be able to get a 680 to 720 on test day, ideally you would have reached that score range at least once (and preferably) more than once on the GMAT Prep practice test.

With that said, if you really do score in the mid to low 500s on your practice test it is unlikely that you would get a 680 on test day. As you said you will not get any money back at this stage. If you do go and sit for the test you cannot take the test again for another 31 days. You could use this official test as a very real practice session. It depends on what you want to do.

The little voice in my head is telling me to postpone. I Have spent quite a bit of time reading the GMAT structure and studying for it, and the main issue I see experts mention is that to do well a test taker needs to be consistent.

Now, one more question:
should I be a simple no show on test day, or should I let the test center know I am not coming?
I am thinking about giving 3 to 4 more weeks prep, will I be able to take the test then if I am a no show now?

Thanks.

I typically suggest that students achieve their target score on at least 2 practices tests before they take the official test.

I know the following pieces of information don't help you much, but other students should be aware that:

- if you reschedule your test more than 7 calendar days before the scheduled test date, you will be charged $50.00 to do so.

- if you reschedule your test less than 7 calendar days before the scheduled test date, you will be charged the full registration fee of $250

- if you cancel your test more than 7 calendar days before the scheduled test date, you will receive an $80.00 refund.

Cheers,

Thanks Brent, Just completed the re-schedule for July 10, giving me an additional 8 weeks prep.
More than postponing G'day my goal is to be consistent, and of course not just take the test because I had to take it. After all the MBA is a personal choice not a lifelong prerequisite for happiness.

By the way payed the full 250 bucks for re-scheduling. Oh well I am sure I'll forget about the loss once I reach the desired outcome.

Thanks,

M
