Salmon

by sparkles3144 » Sun Feb 16, 2014 6:04 pm
Some people eat salmon, sardines, ground flax seeds and fish oil capsules because the foods contain significant amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to help prevent blood clots.

Which of the following can be correctly inferred from the statements above?

A. People who eat salmon or sardines everyday will completely prevent any blood clots.

B. People who do not eat ground flax seeds on a regular basis are in danger of developing blood clots after the age of fifty-five.

C. A diet consisting of salmon, sardines, ground flax seeds, and fish oil capsules is the most effective way to prevent blood clots.

D. Some people with a diet consisting of salmon, sardines, ground flax seeds, and fish oil capsules will reduce their risk of blood clots.

E. Only eating foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids is necessary to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Is it D?

Hi sparkles3144,

Yes, your answer is correct. Inference questions can sometimes be tricky, but this one isn't. The easiest way to view inferences questions is to treat the prompt as if it's a set of "facts." With your facts, one of the 5 answers should logically match or "come next"; the other 4 answers won't necessarily match the facts.

Here, the facts tells us:
1) Some people eat salmon, sardines, etc. because of the Omega-3 fatty acids.
2) Omega-3 fatty acids are known to help prevent blood clots.

The second fact really helps to prove the correct answer.

Here are some easy ways to eliminate the other answers:

A:: BAD GENERALIZATION: "Known to help prevent" doesn't mean "Completely prevent for everyone".

B:: NEW INFORMATION: Nothing in the argument mentioned anything about what happens after a certain age! We can't conclude something for which we have no evidence.

C:: BAD GENERALIZATION: How can we say this is the "most effective way" when it hasn't been compared to any other ways?

E:: NEW INFORMATION: The argument never said that Omega-3's are required for health in every food that someone eats.
