Not only did the systematic clearing of forests in the United States create farmland (especially in the Northeast) and gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but it also caused erosion and very quickly deforested whole regions.

I could eliminate choices C,D,E.....im preety much confused to choose between A & B.

I guess B is correct because of the pattern Not only....but also....

I say A

C,D & E violates the "not only...but also" rule

B states that the creation of farmland gave the customers relatively inexpensive land, which is not the case.

In choice A "but it also" is correct since "it" is clearly referring to the systematic clearing of land

A is also parallel.
"Not only did it do this but it also did that"

On second analysis...the answer could be D b/c I don't see any rules being violated.

A) "not only...but also" must follow the same train of thought. The statement goes from an pro to a con
B) Same thing for B. Also "but also" should be "but it also"
C) "clearing" is the incorrect form of the verb
E) Same error as A. Plus "Not only...but it" is wrong

Too bad I can't second guess myself during the exam. :roll:

We need to consider two issues here:
1. Idiom: Not Only X but also Y
2. Tense: "create" and "cause" should be in same tense.

A. "create farmland" is in simple present. "gave consumers" is in simple past. "caused erosion" is simple past. In-consistent verb tenses, so A is out.
B. In-consistent verb tenses, so B is out.
C. In-consistent verb tenses, so C is out.
D. Right idiom is "Not Only X, but also Y". So, D is out.
E. Correct.

Hi,
In my opinion, just because we have "but it also" in the middle of the sentence doesn't mean that we need to have "Not only" in the begining of the sentence (however, the inverse is not true: if we have "Not only" in the begining we need to have "But also" at the end).

Also, i think that "Not only" and "but also" provides two ideas that have somehow "equal meaning". For example the systematic clearing of forests not only created farmland but also gave consumers inexpensive houses.
(not only "a benefit", but also... " another benefit")

But here however, we have two opposing ideas "created farmland and inexpensive houses" but caused erosion.

So, that's why i think its D
