Going to battle tomorrow.. any advice?

by joostinshu » Thu May 28, 2009 5:57 am
I am what you would call an anomaly. I have taken the GMAT 5 times to date and am sitting for my sixth time. I have been stuck in the low 600's with a 620 as my highest score.

I changed my entire routine, hired a tutor for the last six weeks and have seen practice exams jump significantly. The biggest issue I have is simply remaining calm during the real exam.

Has anyone been in my circumstance and been able to improve their score? I would love to hear how you got yourself in the right mindset the day before and the day of.

Well, I only took it once. One thing I advice you to do is to take all the breaks. Go drink water and pee if you can!

What are your detailed scores so far? (highest and lowest)

Some tips for tomorrow:

1. Stay calm. I know its extremely difficult to stay calm and stay focussed, but do your best.
2. One question at a time. Dont ever ever think about the outcome or the score or how you are doing while taking the test. Concentrate on the question at hand and do your best to eliminate wrong answers.
3. DO NOT get stuck on one question. If you think that even after a minute that you are going no where with it. Go to plan B. Eliminate the ones that you think are off the mark and then trust your instincts.
4. If you have absolutely no idea on a DS question - Avoid the obvious answer. Its mostly wrong. Eg: If you have one questions which asks for the value of A*B, and statement 1 gives the value of A and Statement 2 gives the value of B - then avoid selecting Answer choice C. Mostly there is another way. and the ans choice would mostly be either A or B.
5. If you run out of time at the end (which you ideally should not), and have like 20 secs to answer 7 questions. Choose the same answer choice like D or C for all of them. This way you are atleast going to get a few right.
6. Like the above post said take all the breaks and once you complete a section, Forget about it. And prepare yourself mentally to attack the next.
7. Make sure you take all the necessary docs and be at your center atleast half an hour before your test time.
8. Bring something to drink and a snack for the breaks.

9. And finally get one thing in your mind. GMAT is just a test. Its absolutely no parameter thats going to affect your life!! So whatever is the outcome take it with a smile and dont forget to treat yourself after the test for all the efforts that you've put in!!!

All the very best. Hope you'll outperform your expectations!!!!

Be positive about yourself and your abilities. Tell yourself you WILL do well. Resolve to not worry or be anxious.

For those of you who read this post, and who might have an inkling that they might suffer from the jitters, l suggest you give yourself as much time as possible to learn how to move through this and feel the calm, since many people deal with this themselves instead of working with professionals, do your best to figure out what will make you feel calm the day of: meditation, breathing, sleeping, eating right, engaging in a healthy lifestyle ... as well as energy work, acupuncture.

For the poster, I'd suggest that one thing that might help is for you to get a set of headphones, and plug in and listen to:<http://testprepny.com/pages/products_gmat.htm> it will help relax you.

At least once if not once every couple of hours, imagine going into the test center and re-ignite your senses: and re-write your experience. Imagine that you feel your most confident and focused. And then touch base with how you see-feel-hear, etc. it.

Good Luck!
