GMAT Prep ques

by ayushiiitm » Fri Jun 25, 2010 5:18 am
HI all,

I think the answer should be C

coz from 1st stem triangle could be + or *

from second stem triangle could be * or /

OA is different

Will post later

Hey ayushiiitm,

Be careful, because you always want to keep in mind EXACTLY what the question asks. The question is not asking what operation the triangle symbol represents. It's asking whether or not the equation in the prompt is true.

The prompt basically boils down to: "Does the triangle symbol indicate addition or multiplication?" Because either of those two will make the equation true.

Statement (1), as you pointed out, tells us that the symbol is either addition or multiplication. Either one of those will make the equation true. So (1) is sufficient.

Statement (2), on the other hand, tells us that the symbol is either multiplication or division. If it were multiplication, the equation would be true. If it were division, the equation would not be true. Insufficient.

Answer: A

For those who cannot see attachments, you can see the question here.

Hi ayushiiitm,

The OA is correct. C is not the answer. Accurate rephrasing is key. Essentially, the question is asking wether the "T" operation has commutative property. Only addition and multiplication would result the equation presented.

Rephrase: Is the operation either addition or multiplication?

The first statement is sufficient because of the 4 arithmetic operations, only addition or multiplication agree with the statement. So whether we're dealing with addition or multiplication, the answer to the question will be 'YES'.

Statement (2) is not sufficient because both multiplication and division agree with the statement.

The correct answer is A. A much more detailed explanation as well as video solution is available at GMATPrep Question 1397. To study advanced functions questions, use the Drill Generator to generate timed drills and set topics="Functions & Sequences" and Difficulty="600-700"

Good Luck!
-Patrick
