Can anyone solve this one for me?

A certain restaurant estimates that it loses of the weight of its “quarter

pounder” during cooking. If the advertised weight is its cooked weight, how many pounds of meat are required to make 96 burgers?

Is the Question : how many pounds of meat are required to make 96 burgers ? or how many Extra required ?

Given: Burger loose 1/4 of Wg. During Cooking.

To Make : 96 Burg with Wg. Advertised X pounds
96 = X (1-1/4)
96= 3x/4
x=96 * 4/3

X =128 , Pounds needed.
96-128 = 32 Additional More Meat is required to accommodate loss due to cooking.

Folks, just a gentle reminder to provide the source of the question.

Now, coming to the question.

Since the advertised weight is quarter pound, the original should be
1/4*(1+1/3) = 1/3 pounds. To make 96 burgers you need 1/3*96 = 32 lb

I got the same answer but the answer is 36.This question was from Princeton work book.Find below the problem.The solution below id by plugging in the answer but I wanted to know how to solve it the regular way
This is a great problem to backsolve. Let’s try choice (C) and see if it works. Would 36 pounds of meat yield 96 quarter-pound burgers after losing 1/3 of its weight? If those 36 pounds lose 1/3 of their weight, that will be 1/3 * 36 = 12 pounds. So 24 pounds will be left during cooking. Will that make 96 quarter-pound burgers? ¼ * 96 = 24. Yes. So the answer is Choice (C) .



Please let me know if anyone gets the solution solving it other than PITA

You know that you need 24 lbs at the end (96*1/4).

2/3*x = 24
x = 36.

My bad. I mis-understood the question !

You don't need back-solving here. You can just work off of 96 / 4 = 24
pounds. If 24 pounds is what you need to make 96 burgers, and you
lose 1/3 in the process, you can easily do

24 = x*(1-1/3)

x = 36 lbs.
