Observe that only the small cubes at the corner of the large cube will have exactly three faces which are colored. The number of such cubes = Number of corners of the large cube = 8

If a small cube has no colored face, it must be from inside of the large cubes. Those cubes will also form a cube inside the large cube with each side a length of 2 inches. Thus number of such small cubes = 2*2*2 = 8

Thus two quantities are equal.

Thanks Rahul, I was reviewing this problem and what I did for the 2nd column is count the ones in the middle (4 *2 for up and down) = 8

since the side was originally 4, it would have 4 cubes with side 1 on each side with 4 clustered in the middle..am I right?
