Score Question

by oustone85 » Sat Jul 26, 2008 8:51 am
I just took the test this morning and got a 690 38Q (53%) 46V (99%). I'm very excited with the overall score as it is a good reflection of my practice tests. However, i was shocked to see how heavily weighted it was towards verbal. I've typically been closer to a 42Q 41V.

My question is, will schools be turned off by heavily weighted it is towards verbal? I doubled majored in finance and accounting while in college (University of Oklahoma). I am currently an accountant for a fortune 500 company. Will my experience and background make up for my unimpressive quant score? I'd prefer to not take the test again, because i'm not sure i can duplicate the verbal score and it's not worth it to me to take again to stay the same or only improve by 10-20 points.

Dear oustone85,

Congratulations on your score! Schools will not be concerned by the higher verbal score, especially since you are in a numbers-oriented career. It is definitely not worth retaking the test, in my humble opinion.

Good luck,
Lisa

Forgot to ask, is my quant score low enough that I should explain it in my essays? I'm targeting top 35-50 schools. SMU and Rice being the main two.

PS: Got my score report this morning, I got a 6 on the AWA.

Dear oustone85,

For Rice and SMU, I would not explicitly address your quant score. Just be sure to highlight your quantitative/analytical skills on your resume.

Good luck,
Lisa
