B Schools to Apply to - Urgent!!!

by deepti387 » Fri Jun 24, 2011 4:19 am
Hi all,

I have a work experience of 2 years in a major software company. I am yet to write the gmat. In my practice tests I am getting around 700. On the test day I can have my scores sent to 5 universities for free. Based on my work experience and a gmat score of 700 can anyone please suggest 5 Universities to me.

2 safe, 2 reach and 1 ambitious.

Hello,

I wish I could help but without further info it's impossible to recommend schools. For example, what are your goals? Are you interested in programs anywhere in the world or in the US or some other locale? And your two years are doing what?

Moreover, your scale doesn't make sense to me. I view reach and ambitious as meaning the same thing - not likely, but still reasonably possible with a great application.

In my view, a very rough set, assuming some business interface in your IT role, would be USC as a reach, Cambridge (UK) and Washington U. (Olin) as on-pars, and Tulane as a safety.

Good luck with your GMAT!

Hi Cindy,

Sorry for the half baked post there :)

Let me try again. Here goes :)

I am an Indian, female, currently working in a software major. My work experience so far is 2 yrs. Will be 3 years by the the time of joining a school. My projected GMAT scores are around 700. I have 89% in my high school and 83% in my 11th and 12th. My undergraduate gpa is 7.3 on a scale of 10. I am a part of the Corporate Social Responsibilites group in my company and have been a regular at all the charity events organised as an active volunteer. I am avid reader. Have actively participated in many extracurricular activities like : debating, skits, eloqution, poem recitals. Have also been on the editorial team of school and college magazines. I am looking to apply to schools in the US and ISB in India. As for MBA I want to specialize in HR or Marketing (more preference to HR). As of now all I know are the schools that are listed in the top 20-30 lists. And based on my practice tests I am getting 700. I dont know where to start my research. Any help from someone who is aware would be useful I would basically like a sample list of 5 universities( based on my profile info so far i.e gmat 700 and work ex 2 yrs) that I can atleast start researching on. Hope you can help. Thanks

Hello,

Thanks. I assume your work is technical in the IT company, not on the business end? If so, you're in an over-represented group, and so the bar is higher. Being a woman helps, in that most (if not all) b-schools have not yet reached 50-50 in male/female representation.

Also, you don't mention your goals, which are a critical element in selecting which schools to target.

I would consider ISB quite a high reach. Five schools you might start looking at in the US (they vary in competitiveness from reasonable reach to on par) are Tepper, USC, Georgetown, UNC, Olin.

I think you would find helpful my free subscriber mini-report that walks you through how to select a list of schools, including assessing your competitiveness, your wants/needs, and what the schools offer: Best MBA Programs: A Guide to Selecting the Best Ones.
