SC problem

by darcraidr1 » Thu Aug 23, 2012 12:01 pm
Emily Dickinson's letters to susan huntington dickinson were written over a period beginning a few years before susan's marriage to emily's brother and ending shortly before emily's death in 1886, outnumbering her letters to anyone else.

The answer is

Dickinson, which were written over a period beginning a few years before Susan's marriage to emily's brother and ending shortly before Emily's death in 1886, outnumber

My question is the ",which" makes the clause a noun modifier and I thought noun modifiers would have to be directly next to the ,which ... in this case Susan Huntington Dickinson. The clause meaning is definately linked to "letters" I dont see how this would be right... Anyone care to explain??
