Thanks in advance. This one is also from GMAT Prep...

The numbers x and y are not integers. The value of x is closest to which integer?
1. 4 is the integer that is closest to x+y
2. 1 is the integer that is closest to x-y

Answer is E (highlight to see)

Here is what I did

X+Y is closest to 4
X-y is closest to 1
so 2x is closest to 5 and x is closest to 2.5.

Now just see what happens if u assume x = 2.6 and y = 1.5. Both the above statements hold true. And X is closest to 3

But if you assume x = 2.4 and y = 1.5 again both the statements hold true, but now x is closest to 2 instead of 3

So ans is E
