A sports retailer ordered white and yellow tennis balls in equal number but the dispatch clerk of the tennis ball company erred and dispatched 50 extra yellow balls and making ratio of white balls to yellow balls 8/13. How many tennis balls did the retailer order originally.

A. 180
B. 130
C. 140
D. 160
E. 120

OA is D
What is the best approach to solving this? I need an Expert contribution on this. Thanks

Let x = the number of white (or yellow) tennis balls originally ordered. We can create the equation:

x/(x + 50) = 8/13

13x = 8x + 400

5x = 400

x = 80

Therefore, the total number of white and yellow tennis balls originally ordered is 80 + 80 = 160.

Answer: D
