Hey .. Contrats for ur achievement .. great score!!
and thnks a ton for sharing such a inspirational debrief with us
Thanks a lot
You mention RCs being up to 5 paragrpahs ? YIt was really of 5 paragraphs and up to 5 and 6 lines, if so, it goes more tha number of words what GMAT claims as maximum limit ?
I donno about the max limit on the no. of words in a GMAT RC passage. But from what I can recollect, those were 5 paragraphs with around 5 lines each.
What source did you use to practise CR ? all sources and your commentd about each of them plese.
I used OG-12 and OG verbal guide 4th edition. Practiced some of the CR LSAT questions last year. I tried using Powerscore bible but it was a bit too exhaustive for my liking.
But frankly, i didnt have much trouble with CR. I felt I was analytic enough for CR. So I didnt fret much over CR. Most of my lessons in CR were out of my mistakes in tests and reading the explanations.

Hey Karan..
Congratulationsss on the great score!!!
I was to take the GMAT in Mumbai on the 26th Oct at 10am and cancelled it at the last hour and pushed my date to November as I was not prepared. Glad you could take the date and crack the GMAT!! :)
I am from a Media background and I really need to work on my Quant skills
Were the questions similar to the last 50 questions of OG - 12. If there is any strategy you could share for Quant it would be great.

Thanks!
All the best for your applications

You dont know Rima what a favor you have done for me. I feel I got the date as you postponed it. :) Thanks a lot.
Well on the topic of Quant, you need not worry. In both my attempts, the quant questions I encountered were relatively on the easy side. You can say as the last 20-30 questions of OG. So if you get the same difficulty of questions, no need to worry. :)

And you being from media background will make verbal a piece of cake for you. So no worries there... :)

Guys back again.. :)
Just had to tell this to everyone here to emphasize the importance of the GMAT prep software. In my 1st attempt I remember vividly one quant question and one CR question straight from one of the GMAT Prep tests. Also in the second attempt one of the passage I got when I was running out of time RESEMBLED one passage from the GMAT Prep. This helped me breeze through the passage and get a fair idea. I was wondering whether or not to post those questions here coz of the GMAC confidentiality agreement. Hence I cannot hint at those questions but I can definitely ask you guys not to ignore GMAT prep tests.

Well to be frank I didn't practice much of RC. Just the OG-12 is the source I did fully for RC. I found reading long passages boring. :) But I did practice a lot of CR. That helped. Also solved some RC passages of LSAT. I also attempted a lot of GMAT tests where I did the RC's fully, read the explanations of the questions I got wrong. That was it. :)
But other than OG-12, OG- Verbal edition is good. So is Aristotle RC-99. These 3 materials should be more than enough...

I took the GMAT on the 26th October for the second time in Mumbai. Scored 740 (Q:50 / V: 40/ AWA: 5.0).

Let me first describe my profile. I am a software engineer from India and completed my bachelors in engineering in 2009 and have been working for the last one year or so. I had some time between graduating middle of last year and starting to work end of last year. I always wanted to do an MBA from a world class university and hence started preparing for the GMAT,as the scores are valid for 5 years, which will give me enough time to gain some valuable work-ex and then applying for an MBA(preferably in fall 2012).

Will need your help during application too.
Mubarak ho Karan-bhai on the fantastic score.

With your comment ('enough time to gain some valuable work-ex and then applying for an MBA') I'm glad you realise that the GMAT score is just one of the factors (a very important one, though) considered by Adcoms. So the story doesn't end with a brilliant score. It does give you a dhinchak start. So be proud of it and do focus on building a strong overall profile.

I wish you get into the school(s) that are topmost in your list and have a great career.

I have attached a MR review SC guide. I found it useful. I stored it on my phone and read it whenever I was travelling.

Hey bro , i got same profile as you, except that i am from 2007 and a IT professional in a MNC

you scare me a lot , as you prepared for 2 years and i dont even have 2 months to prepare :) :) that too you can understand i am in IT and in a client location :) :)

how much can we score by studying OG thoroughly ?

when should i write my exam to get into a good college(top 100) by next fall ?
I am working now so dont have much time to study , so need to know , if its fine to write the exam in jan middle or Jan end for joining a college in september ?

Thanks a lot for your time...

@ rajasekharp

You already have 3 yrs of work ex and will be around 4 once you get into b school. So a little less GMAT score is pardonable considering you have done well in ur job thus far(which am sure you have :) )

Doing OG THROUGHLY is more than enough. But you need to do that(throughly)

And as you ll be applying for fall 2011, its better if you finish off the GMAT max by jan end as you ll need to devote time for apps. So you still have around 2 months. Devote a couple of hours each day for good study and you should be on safe waters come January.
