740 on the GMAT...(Q50,V40)

by whytdelight » Tue Nov 04, 2008 8:29 am
So finally the GMAT is over. Just got back and well...here's how I see it.

I was aiming for a 760. I'm not cribbing, I know 740 is a good score. The only thing is that my undergrad acads are bad and I was hoping a 760 would be enough to compensate for that. Now I'm hoping a 740 will be enough to compensate for that:P. What do you guys think?

I know it doesn't make sense to reappear with a score of 740 so would a 740 be enough to compensate for bad acads( I have two years of work ex in online marketing and advertising, quality of work ex is good and I should be able to get good recommendations. My extra circulars are decent - two years of theater in college).

Nehow, you all know the important points to remember(through some great debriefs in the past by various people on this forum), I'll add a few or stress upon a few points here:

* Yes the GMATPrep is the best reference and the closest thing to the actual GMAT. In my personal opinion, the difficulty level is the same as well. The only reason the GMATPrep seems easier is because so many of the questions are repeated from the OG.

* Take the breaks! Even if you don't need to go to the loo, just take the break, relax your mind a bit. (For me, stretching out really helped)

* Even if you feel you're not doing well, don't panic because if you do, you'll only end up doing worse! There will be times where you feel like you've gotten a couple of questions wrong in a row and things are going down hill but just shrug it off!

* If you lose focus in the middle, just look away from the screen, take a few seconds off and then get back to the exam. It'll help you refocus.

* Keep a track of the time but don't obsess about it! It's important to maintain pace but not so much so that you're not able to concentrate. If you've taken enough practice exams, chances are you're already maintaining a decent pace so don't look at the timer after every 5 mins.

I'll write some more points down later when I think of them but it the meantime, I've just come back n people are callin..so gotta run:)..

As requested:

MOCK TEST SCORES:

GMATPrep 1: 720 (Q50, V38)

PowerPrep Test 1: 740(Q49, V41)

KAPLAN TEST 1: 650(Q50, V36)

KAPLAN TEST 2: 620(Q44, V33)

KAPLAN TEST 1: 610(Q50, V31)...yeah i was gettin a bit freaked and confused when scores started going down instead of up

Powerprep TEST 2: 750(Q49, 42) ...750 feels really nice:)

GMATPrep TEST 2: 760(Q50, V44)...i thought i was on the road to stardom

GMATPrep TEST 1(repeat): 720(Q50, V38)...i was like 'WTF?!'

GMATPrep TEST 2(repeat): 770(Q50, V45)...way too many questions repeated in this one for it to count, just a confidence booster.

FINAL: 740(Q50, V40)....wanted that 760 bt u can't retake the GMAT with a score of 740, it's just silly :P.

Now, STUDY MATERIAL:

OG 11 (Make sure you start and end your preperation with this, include all the other material in the middle)

Kaplan Premier Program (Nice book , similar to OG. Worth buying plus you get the CD with the tests)

Kaplan 800 (to sharpen your skills. Again, this book has certain sections where it helps. I found the DS useful. Not enough questions though.)

Sahil's Notes on Grammar as well as a concise version which I made on my own.

And the 'Beat the GMAT forums:)'. That's basically it. Lemme know if ne wants to know anything else.
