Profile Evaluation Request

by rowbus » Sun Mar 08, 2009 7:16 pm
If it's not too much trouble, could someone please review my profile below and let me know where I stand? My goal is a top-ten school...

College GPA: 3.11 at a top-tier liberal arts college, majored in Spanish

Work Experience: I've worked for six years as a project manager for a family-owned construction company in Alabama. During that time, I started a sister company (partnership with my father) that's basically a real-estate holding firm. I have a 50% position as managing partner of the LLC. I've built apartments, houses, and churches during my six years as a manager. I've also worn the hat of a property manager for the sister company--handling vacancies, maintaining the properties, etc.

Other:

2008-2010 Board Member Rotary Club
2006-2007 Committee Chairman, Rotary Club
2007-2008 Invited Participant, "Leadership (My City Name)"
2007-Founded an Under 40 club for younger Rotarians within my Rotary Club
2007: Board Member, AHA Heart Walk
2009: Started a hands-on service project initiative within my Rotary Club which gives members the opportunity to participate in weekend projects 8 to 10 times a year. Personally scheduled these events myself.
*Annual On-Air Volunteer for Public Radio Fundraising
*Annual Volunteer at Local Arts Non Profit
*Speak conversational Spanish and volunteer as translator for community organizations when needed
*Award-winning songwriter (I spent nine months immediately after college touring around the southern half of the country in an original rock band. I still write songs, though my band days are long over.).
*Released an album of songs in 2008 that's available for sale on iTunes and on 13 other digital retail sites. Have sold copies of the album to people all over the world.
*Invited Performer at the 2008 Kentuck Arts Festival, one of the top 10 Folk Arts Festivals in the U.S.

Okay, I'll stop there. I'm worried about the following things:

1. GMAT
I've taken 4 practice tests thus far, with the following results:
GMAT 1 590 (V40, Q31)
GMAT 2 640 (V40, Q36)
GMAT 3 640 (V40, Q39)
GMAT 4 620 (V39, Q37)

I have three weeks to get my quant score up to par before I take my first official test. Pretty tall order.

2. Quant Background
I took ONE math class in college and got a B-. I'm thinking of enrolling in a stats course this summer and working to get an A. Good idea?

3. GPA--A 3.11 is not all that hot, is it?

Thanks for indulging me. Look forward to your response!

Hi rowbus,

While the two most important factors in your business school applications will be your work experience and your GMAT score, your GPA and lack of quant skill may be a bit of a flag. Your thoughts for the statistics class are on the money, as top-tier b-schools definitely want to see a comfort level with quantitative skills because the first year can be heavy in math and analysis. While attending a liberal arts college is not a disadvantage in and of itself, supplementing your past academic work with an A in a class or two as proof of your quant skills is definitely recommended.

Your work experience looks very good - a lot of management and leadership roles that you should emphasize in your application. The other positions & activities you list also speak to your leadership experience, and are even more of a plus because it looks like there is a continuity involved -- you should definitely highlight this theme in your essays.

As for your GMAT score, top-ten b-schools are really looking for strong scores in the upper 600s and 700s. Taking the test in 3 weeks without really working on your math skills will most likely not result in a higher score. If you can, postpone your GMAT a few months until you have time to ramp that score up. You sound like you're not confident in knocking the ball out of the yard in three weeks, so all you'd be doing is spending $250 to stick a sub-par score on your transcript and end up retaking it after studying anyway. You could even take that math class over the summer as part of your prep for a dual benefit.

Hope that sheds some light on things... good luck!
