SC - requiring explanation

by karthikpandian19 » Thu Nov 10, 2011 6:13 am
The recent decrease in revenue has been attributed to rising energy prices and plummeting consumer confidence, much lower than is typical for this time of year, which hurt sales of big ticket items such as automobiles.

A much lower than is typical for this time of year, which hurt
B which was much lower than is typical for this time of year, hurting
C because it was much lower than is typical for this time of year, which hurt
D being much lower than typically is for this time of year, hurting
E having been much lower than is typical for this time of year and hurt

Hi karthikpandian19 --

We say B.

Here's our reasoning:

The underlined phrase modifies the noun "consumer confidence".

You could rephrase the last part to be "[Consumer confidence] was much lower than is typical for this time of year, hurting sales..."

A: "much lower" doesn't have a noun -- what was much lower?
B: we think this is correct
C: Using "because" here actually links the phrase that follows to the noun of the independent clause - "because" would relate the last half to "The recent decrease has been attributed..." This is wrong. The second phrase is related to "consumer confidence" and so this doesn't fit.
D: grammar error - being lower than what typically is?
E: parallelism error: "having been" and "hurt" don't match

This is a rather clumsy explanation -- and we're not even sure we got the answer right! But that's our thought process, FWIW.

except B all the option having "which" in them are incorrect as they wrongly use it.
D eliminated for "being"
In E and B i felt B was waaaay better! :)
If OA is A, IMO B
If OA is B, IMO C
If OA is C, IMO D
If OA is D, IMO E
If OA is E, IMO A

FML!! :/
