Best Online MBAs and Chances of Getting In

by jpgaler » Tue Feb 24, 2009 7:20 pm
Hi, I'm new to the forums but have picked up alot just browsing through all the posts. I have a question in regards to the validity of online MBAs. I am currently an Air Force Officer serving as a Satellite Operator. The AF has been my dream for a long time and I do not see myself getting out, but want to be prepared regardless. To advance, we must have a master's degree of some kind. While a lot of my peers are getting "check-the-box" degrees, I at least want an MBA and at least want it from a reputable university. There is a chance I could get out in about 6 years, so I want to be prepared should that happen. However, given my duty location, I am forced to go the online route. My question is, how well perceived are online MBAs in the business world (given that most of the diplomas do not mention online) and what kind schools will carry the most clout? The schools I am currently looking at are:
-AZ State
-Penn State
-Florida State
-Indiana
-Syracuse

I think I am most attached to Florida State because it is the most affordable, but is it legit? Will any of these schools be viewed higher than the other since none are in the top 10? Also, what are my chances of getting into these schools. I have a 3.21 GPA, 2 years as a military officer in charge of $31 billion worth of satellites and a 700 GMAT.

If anyone could let me know what they think about these schools and my chances, I would really appreciate it.

Perhaps this might give you another school to consider.

The Economist recently ranked the Online MBA at the University of Florida the #1 distance learning program in the world.

I know you said you're a Nole fan, but perhaps the school down the road might be a good option as well.

I actually have considered UF very seriously. Florida State and Oklahoma State are both very appealing because of their affordability. However, I wonder if it is better to spend alot more to get an MBA from UF, Drexel, ASU, etc. If it doesnt matter because it is an online MBA, I will stay cheap, but if those names truly carry, I wouldn't mind spending a little more. Let me know.
