Male, Indian, Engineer (Production Engineering)

Background-
2 Years in Teach for India, Non- profit, Full Time (2012 onwards)
2 Years in Pricing Panel of Tata Motors, Automobile (2010-2012)

Post MBA I want to work in a top consultancy firm. I have held positions which required me to come up with quick and effective solutions, and I enjoyed this part of my work the most. I prefer to work in diverse teams working mutually towards a positive outcome. I want to pursue MBA to be more competitive, to build a strong network during my degree, and to get into consulting, preferably related to education.

My Target schools are:
Darden, Duke, Ross, Tuck, Kelly and Emory.

My Questions are:
1) Does one require certain pre-requisites to target consultancy after MBA.
2) Is it a good choice of schools to target as per my profile?
3) Will the fact that I have a 75 percentile in Verbal lower my chances in the above schools i.e. should I retake GMAT?

Rohit,
Your GMAT score is fine. Your experience (especially TFI) is good and would definitely help. The target list of schools which you have is a mix of realistic to stretch. Are you aiming for EA in Duke and Tuck? If yes, then that would be really great but the deadlines are round the corner so hopefully you have already made some progress so far.

As far as your post-MBA goals are concerned, I am not sure about your rationale and the connection which you are trying to make with your past experience. There isn't a pre-requisite for management consulting as long as you have good problem solving skills and you are can work in an ambiguous and unstructured environment. Is there a reason why management consulting is your short term MBA goal (besides the fact that you enjoy it -or would enjoy it?) What are your long term career goals and is management consulting the perfect bridge?

You have a good GMAT score, but your undergrad GPA is average. I think you would be able to make up for your low GPA with the GMAT score. B-schools generally evaluate academic ability on the above two parameters. Your achievements as being topper in the class and getting acknowledged for that, would increases your chances.
You have an excellent work experience. Your leadership roles and achievements at Tata Motors and Teach for India make your application really strong. Highlight the risks that you took while joining Teach For India and reasons for this choice. Your extracurricular activities are filled with commendable leadership roles too. That gives you an edge over other India students.
Coming to your questions, one does require some specific traits to be in consultancy role post-MBA. These include strong academic performance, proven ability to work hard and leadership ability. If you are selected at top business schools, then it would be comparatively easier to get roles of your choice.
As far as your choice of schools is concerned, I think you are not aiming high enough. You need to target a few of top 10 schools and others from top 20. You may apply to Duke, Tuck, ISB, Booth and INSEAD.

You may not appear for GMAT again. The incremental benefit that you would get out of higher verbal score would be much less compared to spending all your energies on application essays. B-schools would try to assess your verbal ability by looking at other aspects of your application like transcripts and application essays. As long as you show strong leadership potential and ability to change the world for good, minor weaknesses here and there won't matter much. Good Luck!
