average of x,y, & z

If x+y=8z, then which of the following represents the average of x,y,and z, in terms of z.

(A) 2z+1
(B) 3z
(C) 5z
(D) z/3
(E) 3z/2

And I don't understand the explanation given in the GMAT review book.

help!

Given, (x + y) = 8z
Hence, (x + y + z) = (8z + z) = 9z

Now, average of x, y, and z = (x + y + z)/3 = (9z)/3 = 3z

The correct answer is B.

take 3 numbers which satisfy the given equation
here x=4; y=4; z=1 (satisfies the given equation x+y = 8z;
so average becomes (4+4+1)/3= 3 or 3(1)= 3(z)
