merit scholarship

by mehrasa » Wed Oct 12, 2011 2:13 am
n order to ensure that talented individuals continue to reside in the state, some states now offer to high ranked in-state students merit scholarships that are of higher value even than offered to low-income students.

a) to high ranked in-state students merit scholarships that are of higher value even than offered to low-income students
b) to high ranked in-state students merit scholarships even higher in value than to low-income students
c) highly ranked in-state students merit scholarships even higher in value than the scholarships offered to low-income students
d) merit scholarships for in-state students who are ranked even higher than low-income students
e) merit scholarships for even higher amounts to highly ranked in-state students than what's offered to low-income students

to me the answer is choice C

Confused between C and D

C rightly compares the scholarship value
and D gives more clear meaning and structure

some states offer X for Y who are ranked even higher than Z

Shouldn't we use greater to compare scholarship values ? ? If that is the case then D is right. Correct me if i am wrong

i think the right pattern for verb 'offer' is "offer somebody something" I chose C based on this pattern... regarding greater and highr, i think you are right for number (proportion) comparison, greater is superior to higher; however, we do not have any choice with 'greater'

Good question,

IMO: C

D looks gramatically concise than C, but it changes the meaning!

Offer X to Y is the correct constrution

what is wrong with B: offer to Y X
what is wron with E: offer X 'of' higher amounts to Y

X - merit scholorships
Y - students

C looks okay.. C ~> E
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..
