Profile check for LBS EMBA

by rohitsethi » Wed Jun 25, 2008 5:22 am
Hi,

Would appreciate if you can share your views on my profile, i.e. if it will be viewed as a fit for LBS EMBA.

I've been working as a Software engineer for almost 5 years now.

My work has been appreciated in the past by my previous employers. Work involved developing enterprise applications
as well as various aspects of Project management i.e. Risk Management, Delivery etc. but have not held any official management position as such.

I've been employed full time and have been working as an independent IT consultant as well.

Recently founded a small company but have continued working in the IT industry as well.

I'm interested in doing EMBA but feel have quite a bit of constraints when it comes to choosing a college. I'm working in London and wanted to join a course which is easily commutable. Dont have any support from my current employer therefore cannot really commit to EMBA's which involve studying at multiple campuses. I've shortlisted LBS, CASS, Imperial.

LBS being the only one requiring GMAT, hence the confusion. Do you think my profile is one which will interest LBS admission folks? Guess, would only make sense for me to prepare for GMAT if it will.

If you can suggest any alternatives, that would be great as well.

Thanks in advance!
Rohit

Dear Rohit,

I would encourage you to think about what you are wanting from your MBA experience and your post-MBA goals. If you want to stay in London on your current career path, then all of the schools you mention might work for you. There are obviously differences between the three, so you need to decide what things you value most in a program (i.e., school reputation, curriculum, alumni network, etc.).

If you find CASS or Imperial appear to be a better match for you, then perhaps you might not need to take the GMAT. However, if LBS rises to the top on all the dimensions, then it is probably worth it to take the exam.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa,

Appreciate your response. I was hoping to move towards a more business oreinted/centered role within an organization. I believe getting a full time MBA might be more helpful in achieving that and EMBA might be a long shot, but in my current circumstances EMBA is all i've got.

I think LBS by its shear brand power might actually be of greater help than its counterparts I stated. Please let me know if you do hold a different opnion on this.

Another thought which does come to mind is that I rather wait to get into some kind of managerial role before completing my EMBA, which might actually help me to a greater extent to aim for better roles just after completion of the degree.

If's and But's have never helped me before and i'm not banking on them too much this time as well, hence decided to go for the better brand and get that MBA degree anyhow.

As you might have already come across loads of profiles for EMBA courses, your approval of my profile for LBS would give me the much needed boost, if its an honest opinion, even better :)

Thanks a ton!
Rohit

Dear Rohit,

LBS does have the stronger brand and reputation, especially on a global level. You should probably check the experience requirements for any EMBA program as many have a 10-yr and/or supervisory experience requirement. LBS is a highly competitive school, so it is hard to gauge how you measure up without knowing most of your profile. If you are at or above the GMAT and GPA average, then you will be in a better position. Likewise, if you have demonstrated career progression, strong leadership and teamwork, and a solid rationale for the MBA, then you will be in a more competitive position for LBS.

Best of luck,
Lisa
