Advice Please - 650 Top Teir Program

by JayCFA » Thu Mar 01, 2012 9:19 am
I need some advice on whether or not I should retake the GMAT. I've taken the exam twice scoring 580 and 650 on my first and seccond attempts, respectively. Here's my profile:

Male 28 years of age
4 years experience (2 years Corporate finance and 2 years Corporate Investment Group)
650 GMAT
3.2 GPA
CFA Level 3 Candidate

Schools Applying to:
Chicago Booth (part-time)
UCLA
Duke
Texas

My stats are:

730 GMAT
< 3.0 GPA from Illinois (ugh, I know :-(...)
8 years US Marines, including 5 years reserves, 3 years active duty officer, volunteered for Afghan deployment which I am on right now.

And I'm probably retaking the GMAT. I'm looking at the same schools you are except Texas.

So yes, I would retake with a 650 if you want to maximize your chances.

Your chances of getting in depend on a lot of things aside from the GMAT, but it still factors in quite a bit. What kind of an institution is your undergraduate degree from? Is it from a highly regarded school? That can play a big role in your ability to get in, as can your community involvement and leadership roles both in the workplace and out of it.

Part-time programs are historically a bit easier to get into, but even with Booth's part-time program I would probably take the GMAT again and aim for about a 680 or 690. I'm not saying it's impossible to get into any of the schools you're applying to with your current GMAT score, it would just allow you to rest a little bit easier because a 650 is generally at the lower end of the accepted averages. That being said, have you given any thought to waiting a bit longer to apply? Maybe working your way up in the company you're with will help you get into the school of your choice.
