mixed solutions question

by AMat700 » Wed Feb 16, 2011 2:57 pm
Three grades of milk are 1 percent, 2 percent, and 3 percent fat by volume. If X gallons of the 1 percent grade, Y gallons of the 2 percent grade, and Z gallons of the 3 percent grade are mixed to give X+Y+Z gallons of 1.5 percent grade, what is X in terms of Y and Z?

A) Y+3Z
B) (Y+Z)/4
C) 2Y+3Z
D) 3Y+Z
E) 3Y+4.5Z

Answer: A)Y+3Z

HOW DO YOU SOLVE THIS QUESTION?

Actually, I figured it out! Duhhhhh. I think when taking the timed test, one's nerves get in the way and one thinks a question is harder than it really is.

.01X + .02Y+.03Z = .015(X+Y+Z)
100(.01X+.02Y+.03Z = .015(X+Y+Z)
1X+2Y+3Z=1.5X+1.5Y+1.5Z
.5Y+1.5Z=.5X
Y+3Z=X
