Inference

by Jatinder » Mon Nov 17, 2008 3:10 am
Advertisements for a certain brand of shampoo claim that continually washing one’s hair with the same brand of shampoo eventually reduces the shampoo’s effectiveness, because all shampoos have residues which build up over time.

It can be inferred from the passage above that the creators of the advertisements hope consumers will respond to the advertisements and do which of the following?

A) Pressure shampoo companies to develop a product which can remove the residue left by any shampoo.

B) Gradually stop using their current brand of shampoo and switch to the advertised brand.

C) Periodically use the advertised brand of shampoo, even if they don’t switch to that brand permanently.

D) Never use the same brand of shampoo for more than a week.

E) Use the advertised brand of shampoo because the residue it leaves actually protects hair.

Can't choose between B& C

A: well i doubt that any company would expect their customers to do so. No company would spend so much money on ads just to boost the sales of other brands.

D: The ad says that continually using the shampoo reduces its effectiveness. Now we don't know precisely after how long does the effectiveness reduces
1 week, a fortnight, 1 month. Also this option is too extreme.

E: this option is not supported by the given information. The ad does not say that the residue left by the advertised shampoo will protect the hair.

If I had to choose Id go for C because the argument says that continually using a shampoo affects the hair. So they won't expect their customers to use their shampoo on a continuous basis. They might expect them to use it periodically.

Whats the OA?

A) Pressure shampoo companies to develop a product which can remove the residue left by any shampoo.

No, it is a weird reaction. Consumers don't do that.

B) Gradually stop using their current brand of shampoo and switch to the advertised brand.

No, because doing this would not help because advertised brand has the same negative effect as other shampoos.

C) Periodically use the advertised brand of shampoo, even if they don’t switch to that brand permanently.

Yes, this seems to be correct because advertisement claims that continously using the shampoo reduces it's effectiveness.

D) Never use the same brand of shampoo for more than a week.

Little confusing but the explaination of mals24 seems to be convincing here.

E) Use the advertised brand of shampoo because the residue it leaves actually protects hair.

No, nothing as mentioned above is claimed by the shampoo company in the advertisement.

C

A, E ---far far way...out of scope infact

D-why only a week

B-if the advt. co expects so..then they will also expect that some other day, customers will switch to another co.

C-best choice...which goes in line with their expectations

A) Pressure shampoo companies to develop a product which can remove the residue left by any shampoo.

Out of Scope

Extreme answer. Nothing about stoping and swtiching to advertise brand is mentioned

C) Periodically use the advertised brand of shampoo, even if they don’t switch to that brand permanently.

D) Never use the same brand of shampoo for more than a week.
Extreme Word "Never"

E) Use the advertised brand of shampoo because the residue it leaves
actually protects hair.
