Question : Over 75% of households in Parksboro have Jacuzzi bathtubs. In addition, the average family income in Parksboro is 50% higher than the national average, and a local store reports record-high sales of most costly brands of hair and body care products. With so much being spent on personal care, Parksboro will be a profitable location for a new Luxe spa-a salon that offers premium services at prices that are above average.

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

In Parksboro, people spend a lot of money on personal care products and their income is higher than the national average. This leads author to believe that they have more money to spend on other luxuries and to conclude that a new luxe spa will be profitable in this area. The argument presented here is flawed as it involves too many assumptions without any mention of their accuracy.

First, the author assumes that if people already spend a lot of money on personal care products, then they will be continue to spend the same on luxe spa services, which cost higher than the usual. What if people allocate a monthly budget for personal care products and they do not want to exceed it by spending on a spa? People might have preference for luxury goods that they buy and may not be ready to compromise on it by going to spa which uses different products.

Second, the author assumes that there are not already other spas in the area that provide the same services at cheaper rates. The people of the area might also have a preference for those spas and it is unlikely if people are already satisfied with a spa offering cheaper services, they might switch to new spa.

Since the validity of above assumptions is not demonstrated in the passage, therefore, the argument is flawed in its reasoning.
