Hi,
I just wanted to post some examples and queries specific to the usage of Appositive

1)
years ago, according to some scientists, an asteroid bigger than Mount Everest slammed into North America, which, causing plant and animal extinctions, marks the end of the geologic era known as the Cretaceous Period.

A. which, causing plant and animal extinctions, marks
B. which caused the plant and animal extinctions marking
C. and causing plant and animal extinctions that mark
D. an event that caused plant and animal extinctions, and it marks
E. an event that caused the plant and animal extinctions that mark
Here in the above question the Answer was been declared as 'E'. But in Option A and Option B 'Which' refers to 'Mount Everest' or 'Asteroid' or ' North America' ???
2)

c.the works of Edgar Allan Poe,ignored in his native country, the
d.the works of Edgar Allan Poe which were ignored in his native country, the
e.the works of Edgar Allan Poe having been ignored in his native country, the

here the answer was been declared as 'D' .the option 'C' was not choosen becoz 'Ignored' is ambitious , whether it refers to 'Works' or it refers to Edgar Allan Poe itself.
I got the third one wrong...

Ques # 1: Which refers to the action in the previous clause, an error that gmat does not allow...A and B are wrong coz which refers to the action and not to the nearest noun in the previous clause...
Ques # 2: In B, the entire phrase an architectural.....till the end modifies Erasmus's tomb..
Ques # 3: Is der any typo in the option D...Does option D has comma before which...I eliminated D for not having comma before which...n which when not present along with a preposition must be preceded by a comma..

Also, let us know the source of the question...

Received a PM asking me to respond. I would be happy to but, as adi_800 noted, we need to cite the sources of the questions. Please post the authors for each question.

Also, thanks for your suggestion to write an article about appositives!

Yea, I got 1 incorrect too, the first one, chose option B.

These questions look very familiar, they are either from Kaplan or the OG.

I can't reply to anything unless the author has been given proper credit (for copyright reasons). Where you found the problem is merely a location (like finding a book in the library or at the book store). We actually need to give credit to the author.

Also, possibly bad news: if these are indeed Kaplan or OG problems, I can't reply. GMAC does not allow OG questions to be posted online (I know lots of people do but, as a professional GMAT instructor, I can't afford to break GMAC's rules!). And, a few years back, Kaplan requested that MGMAT instructors not discuss Kaplan problems online. :(
