(A) beating in unison and adopting
(B) they beat in unison while adopting
(C) beat in unison, and adopt
(D) beating in unison yet adopting
(E) even though they beat in unison and adopt

D is correctl

correct use of participle beating for subordinating next sentence

and "yet" correctly mentions the difference.

Definitely D.

The cells adhere to one another and beat in unison, BUT they adopt different orientations. I think that "yet" is necessary to portray this.

I do believe that C could well be the answer.

'Beating in unison' and 'adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another' could be 2 different peculiarities that aren't necessarily opposing.

Does this question place the likes of me (whose mind shuts down the minute these biological terms come up) at a disadvantage?

Or am I missing something here?

This isn't a "x, y, and z" sentence describing something IMO. The fragment after the comma is modifying the cells adhereing to one another.
