correct verb form??...SC

by rahulg83 » Mon May 25, 2009 9:12 am
It is possible that early American women’s rights leaders such as Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were borrowing their ideals from the women who had lived in the contemporary Iroquois Indian nations nearby.

* were borrowing their ideals from the women who had lived
* had borrowed their ideals from the women who had been living
* borrowed their ideals from the women who lived
* had been borrowing their ideals from the women who lived
* borrowed their ideals from the women who had been living

Between B and C. B looks better to me though.

IMO E, because had been living is past perfect continous used to describe contemporary people at that time, also borrowed is correctly used in past tense.

This is why I choose B because of "had been living".

You need "borrowed" here and not "had borrowed"?

Please include the OA.

IMO C.

Firstly because it's the most concise. Also,

A- 'were borrowing' and 'had lived' don't make sense.
B- had been can be avoided as it is awkward when used with had borrowed
D- Had been borrowing is wordy
E- had been Verb-ing is almost always wrong.

OA indeed is C
The reason given was that these leaders borrowed their ideas from other contemporary women, so it can be inferred that these other women lived at same time as Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, hence we don't need past perfect form here

Is E an answer?

simple past tense refers that it has already happened and past perfect continuous refers to the women living during that time in past.

Please correct me if am wrong.
