GMAT Tutor

Hi all,

I live in Las Vegas and feel like a tutor would be very helpful. I'm looking for an experienced and professional tutor. I need the most help with speeding up my quantitative processing. Does anyone have any experience with tutors from the big name GMAT prep companies, or even a freelance private tutor?

Hi Steve,

Tutoring may or may not be what you need to fix what sounds like a pacing problem in the Quant section. Before you make that investment, I'm wondering if you can answer a few questions:

1) How far along are you in your studies?
2) What GMAT resources have you been using (Books, Courses, etc.)?
3) What is your score goal?
4) How have you been scoring on your practice CATs?
5) When are you planning to take your Official GMAT?

Rich,

Thanks for the response. I've been studying for about four months now, not including some time spend three years ago when I studied for the GMAT for a few weeks. In 2011, I used Veritas Prep, including a few hours of tutor time. I scored 620 on that attempt. I then took a 3-year professional hiatus. I began studying again in January of this year, reviewing materials from the previous period. I then signed up for the Economist GMAT program and got about three quarters of the way through that quant program. I've taken practice tests, ranging from 590 - 660 as a result. I recently took an actual GMAT and scored 590. I did very poorly on IR & quant, ~31st percentile, and fairly well on the verbal, 82nd percentile. Despite what these results indicate, math has ALWAYs been my strength. I am surprised and frustrated at how I am struggling with the quant. I feel like I could answer most quant questions, if I had more time. I'm just taking too long getting to the right answer. My goal is a 730.

Hi Steve,

When it comes to prepping for the GMAT, there's no "magic option" that works for everyone. I tend to view the process in real simple terms: either a resource helps you to hit your goal or it doesn't. If it doesn't, then you have to invest in some new resources.

Can you tell me your Scaled Scores for both the Quant and Verbal sections of your last GMAT? Even though you haven't hit your goal yet, you've learned some valuable information about Test Day, so you can use that knowledge to your advantage. Business Schools don't care if you take the GMAT more than once, so doing so won't be a big deal. Since the GMAT is a predictable, standardized exam, you CAN train to crush it. You just need to learn (and focus on) some new tactics. Pacing issues affect almost everyone on Test Day; it's likely that the approach you're using is causing your pacing problem.

Rich,

My quant score was 34 and the verbal was 37. What would you suggest for someone in my shoes? I'm living an already busy professional life in the US Air Force. Nonetheless, I am willing to devote as much time as I need, without tubing my work or family life, in order to meet my GMAT goal.
