670 (Q -45, V 38)

Just got back, Disappointed with the score, Life's irony at its very best, The strength became the weakness, the weakness became the strength, all this time i was focusing on getting a verbal score, as luck would have it, thats exactly what happened. But my Quant score went down.

Q - 45 - 74 Percentile
V- 38 - 83 Percentile

Overall - 670 (overall 85 percentile)

I had a very rough experience, would appreciate any advise you can give me, firstly, I've always scored 47 or above on GMATprep's. As i started my test there were two problems, the test center did not have ear plugs or headphones, apparently they were running short of it.

Secondly. during the test, my screen started going crazy with wavy lines all over it. It made it very difficult to concentrate OR even read the question, sometimes it was difficult to see if there is a minus sign or just the fraction arrow. I ended my math section and complained to the administrator. Perhaps i should have complained in the middle of the section, but i was chasing the time as usual on the math section, After i complained my workstation was changed barely second before starting the verbal section. Math was difficult, perhaps i would have only ended with my usual 47, but that would have pushed my score into the 700's.

What do you suggest i do? Report it to GMAC and ask for a retake? I am not a score chaser, but given the fact that i scored 38 in verbal i expected the magical 700 figure. I hate irony in all forms.

Would appreciate if someone can guide me on next course of action.

Dear Mohit,

Let me put myself in your shoes and will react to this situation. Actually what has happened to you is NOT UNCOMMON.
Problems are there everywhere, and we are supposed to face them. Having said that, what I shall do now to resolve this issue??

1.report to GMAC stating your problem. If u have authenticated proof that "real mishap" has taken place in ur test centre, that would support ur case.If NO also, don't mind, just drop a line to GMAC.

2.Now u realised ur real problem.Just assume that real test to be ur "prepTest 3" and start fresh with your Quant skills.
Now ,since u have scaled 38 in verbal u can work more to scale 45+.There is enuf room in quants.I suppose u r a engineer,so U can easily break 50 in Quants provided u put in some more time.

3.take couple of MGMAT/Kaplan for quants atleast and chk ur level once again.

plz do share your view ,if my suggestion has added any value addition to your TP.

Ah, thanks for the reply Here are practice test scores.

The thing is, I know i can get better at quant, i can even ask for a retake, i can say with about 75 percent certainty that i can at least maintain my verbal performance.

I have approximately 80 percentile in both sections, and 85 overall. Is it worth the risk to retake?

That's the main confusion... What do you think?

PS: Can you clarify what do you mean by "authenticated proof" - I complained, the administrator agreed it was a problem and switched me to a different work station.

I guess it depends upon where you want to go and what you want to do with an MBA. I'm assuming this was your first time taking the test. You won't lose anything by taking it again. If you feel that you can do better you should go for it! There is a correlation between your GMAT score and starting salary.

But, that being said, if your application deadlines are coming up then just focus on your other application components as your score is plenty sufficient and you might not want to take time away from your essays to scrape together a few extra percentage points.

Good luck on everything! :)

Hi, thanks for the reply. I only gave 1 month to my GMAT preparation. I'll be applying later this year or early next year. As for my profile I have approximately 3 (3.5 by the time i apply) years of consulting experience in the competitive intelligence and fraud investigation domain with a reputed Big 4 firm. I am keen on pursuing consulting post my MBA and i don't want to delay my MBA by even a year.

I have an above average academic profile (I am an engineer by qualification), other than that i run a non profit consulting portal aimed at helping aspiring and practicing consultants, I have been able to build the membership and the reach of the portal from scratch (https://consultingnetwork.co.in), and also have been active in extracurricular activities such as organizing college events etc, have been volunteering a local NGO for over a year and half as well.

I am targeting schools in the top 15 (including ISB, INSEAD, HBS and Wharton)

I guess i should report it to GMAC and ask for a retake. Still confused though..

Since you have the time then you might as well retake and try to get an even higher score, but your other qualifications sound great and I don't know how much more a higher score will get you other than personal satisfaction, which there is nothing wrong with!

Usually the top schools want a bit more career experience, but it sounds as if your quality of experience is high so applying early next year might be okay.
