So, I'm planning on taking the GMAT on August 2nd. I've been studying seriously since May 1st, but don't feel like I've been making much progress. (Also, I was supposed to take the GMAT last year, so I put in about 3 months of solid studying ending around October).

So far this is what I've done:

1. More or less completed Kaplan Comprehensive 2008 book (took their diagnostic and did pretty much everything in the book).

2. Kaplan Online Practice Test. Scored a 550 (I'm told Kaplan's scores are usually lower, so I should add 70-100 points.)

3. Kaplan Math Workbook. (I didn't do any of the questions, but read it for some math concept review).

4. I just started working in the OG 11. (I completed most of it the last time I studied, but I don't really remember any of the questions). I plan on doing all of the mid-hard questions.

This is what I'm planning on doing:

1. Take 2-3 practice tests (2 mba.com ones and maybe a MGMAT)

2. Review all missed questions from these tests as well as ones from OG 11 as I get through them. (I'd like to review all, but I don't think time will permit).

I'm getting kind of worried that I'm not doing enough. I work fairly long hours, so I'm putting in about an hour a day during the week and then 2-3 hours on Saturdays and Sundays. I feel that I have a clear idea of my weaknesses (basically all quant section) and my strengths (all verbal).

Quant Section:

I feel like I need to focus mostly on Quant. because that's where I struggle. I have a pretty good understanding of concepts tested in problem solving, but sometimes I have trouble wrapping my brain around what is being asked. I think this is more troublesome in Word Problems. All of the concepts covered in my math books were easily understood. I think practicing is the way to go. My biggest problem, like many, is DS. The easier ones are no problem, but more difficult ones I have some trouble. I think it could stem from not fully understanding what is being asked. Any other help on how to raise my Quant score besides practice?

Verbal Section:

I'm comfortable in Verbal and usually get most of the questions right. My biggest weakness is Reading Comp and I think that is just because I either rush through it or miss some of the main points, however, I'm not too bad at it. SC and CR are pretty easy and I think I have a clear understanding.

So basically, how should I focus my time over the next month and a half? I don't want to neglect verbal practice, but feel that I'm bad enough in Quant that I really need to step it up. If I could raise my Quant slightly it would have a huge impact on my score.

I'm starting to get a little stressed since I feel like I don't have enough time to cover enough, however, I think I have a good enough grasp on the overall test that I should score well. My target is 620-650, which I feel is reasonable. Please help!!!

Hi dubc1982,

It sounds like you have a pretty good idea what you need to do to prepare. You might want to focus on issues with pacing on the quantitative problems - I'd suggest working through more problems so that you know where your strengths lie (probability, geometry, etc.), and so that you don't get bogged down on more difficult questions (meaning, try not to take 10 minutes to answer a harder question if, say, you only have 15 minutes left and five more questions afterwards).

For the verbal part, I agree that you should continue to do practice problems so that you don't lose what you've already learned.

Try not to stress too much since you do still have a month and a half left! I have had students who were able to improve a considerable amount in that time, so it can be done!

Good luck!

Hi dubc1982,

If you can get hold of Kaplan 800, you can try that out. I have just started it today. I did the inital CR part of it and found those questions were different from OGs.

Also, try to note down approx how much time you take to solve each question.

dubc,

I think you have enough time to get your hands on the Word Translation guide from MGMAT. You also have enough time to complete the 6 CATs that you would gain access to. I am sitting for the GMAT on July 18th and have been practicing with MGMAT and have been reviewing the MGMAT quant books that I went through about 2 months ago.

My weaknesses are similar to yours. I had to really work my butt off to get my quant score in the low 40s. My biggest weakness on the verbal section is the science passage.

Anyway,

Good luck!
