At a speed of 50 miles/hr, a certain car uses 1 gallon of gasoline every 30 miles.If the car starts with a full 12 gallon tank of gasoline and travels for 5 hours at 50 miles/hour, the amount of gasoline used would be what fraction of full tank?

a)3/25
b) 11/36
c) 7/12
d) 2/3
e) 25/36

The answer is E not sure if my explanation is correct.

Distance:
At a rate of 50 miles per hour, the distance traveled in 5 hours = r*t = 50*5 = 250 miles.

Gas usage for 250 miles:
(1 gallon)/(30 miles) = (x gallons)/(250 miles)
30x = 250
x = 250/30 = 25/3 gallons.

Resulting fraction:
(gas usage)/(full tank) = (25/3)/12 = 25/36.

The correct answer is E.

Hi parulmahajan89,

Mitch has properly explained the math behind this question, so I won't rehash that here.

It's worth noting that this is a rate/ratio question, and you will come across several of these on Test Day. Make sure to take careful notes and keep track of what you've calculated. These prompts tend to be straight-forward, so make sure that you practice them enough to be comfortable with them.

5 hours at 50 miles/hour -> distance in miles = 5 * 50 = 250
Number of gallons consumed = 250/30 = 25/3
Fraction used of whole tank = (25/3)/12 = 25/36

ANSWER = e) 25/36
