Profile evaluation: What are the odds?

by saudipak » Sun Jan 24, 2010 2:40 am
I would like your take on my chances for the following schools (not listed in order of priority):

1) NYU
2) Cornell
3) Columbia
4) Richard Ivey
5) Queen's
6) Rotman
7) LBS
8) Insead
9) IMD

Post-MBA Goal: Work in investment banking / PE in North America or Western Europe (the developed markets) and eventually move to either Middle East or Pakistan.

My profile:

Age today: 31

Natonality: Pakistani

Work Experience: 6 years (4 Years in Pakistan and currently 2 years in Saudi Arabia)

Job Function for the past 6 years: Mainly financial services (trading, investment advisory and debt markets advisory)

Currently I have a full-time job with a big, listed, regional company and working as a part-time consultant with another firm

Strong recommendations available from top 5 people within the company

GMAT: 670

Undergrad: Bachelor's in Economics from a mid-tier university in Toronto, Canada

Undergrad GPA: 2.3 (was on probation and was also briefly suspended!)

Extra-curricular activities: voluntereed with a NGO (from 2004 till 2008), active in student life at undergrad (well documented)

From my perspective-

Strengths: Significant international experience - both in life (brought up in middle east, lived in Pakistan and Canada) and in employment (worked part-time in Canada, full-time in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia)

Weaknesses: Academics at undergrad, GMAT?

How do you think I can make this more attractive given that I would like to apply by end-2010?

Thanks a lot.
Regards.

Given your low GPA, it would be helpful if you could score a 700+ on the GMAT. Also, you should consider creating an alternate transcript by taking classes that will demonstrate your ability to perform in a top MBA environment. Consider graduate level quant classes at a local b-school. Finally, be prepared to fully explain the circumstances that led to your low GPA in undergrad. You can do this on your alternate essay. Best of luck!
