Please evaluate my profile(recent graduate)

by btg_mba » Thu Sep 16, 2010 2:26 am
Hi, can you please evaluate my profile and answer some of my queries?

I am a recent graduate and graduated in May 2010. I did my major in Comp science and engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (ranked highly among the top tech universities and topmost in India)

Currently working in a major international bank in the finance IT dept, since June 2010

gmat - 710 (v39, q49, awa5.5)
gpa- 6.1/10 ( really low acc to international standards, but average gpa in my institute is 6)
extra-currics - excellent, have led dance teams for 2 years during college.
Also involved in sports. Have led cricket teams at both school and college level.
A national level shooting player
social work - yes, 4 months full time and part-time since May 2007
internships- 2 excellent summer internships with great output. One in Ireland, the other in India(in the same bank in which im currently working)
recommendations- have 2 strong recommendations, one from my internship superwiser, other from a professor

Looking at my profile, what are the chances that i can get through an MBA prgm of any b-school from the top 15-20 b-schools?

Can you please suggest any university from the top 15-20 b-schools that takes in recent graduates?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Dear btg_mba,

Most schools will consider applicants with less than 2 years experience. However, it is tougher to gain admission at this level of experience. Successful applicants will generally be high academic achievers (700+ GMAT, top marks in college), demonstrate the maturity needed for business school, and have a compelling reason to go to school at this point in time. The positives in your profile are your GMAT and quality, although limited, work experience. The fact you are working for the same bank you interned with will be an asset, as well as your experience in Ireland. Your essays, recommendations and interviews will be critical to showing you have the skills, motivation, and maturity for business school. Likewise, it is imperative you present a solid rationale for why you need an MBA to achieve your career goals.

I think you have a shot at a top 20 school, but do encourage you to consider some schools in the 20-40 range as well. To give yourself the best chance, you do not want to show the school to be a good match for you in terms of curriculum, resources and culture. Good luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Thanks a lot for a great reply.

I am aware of just three schools which have a special prgm for recent graduates and final year students, Yale SOM, Chicago Booth and HBS
Can you please tell me if any other school has this kind of prgm or if you are aware of some b-schools accepting relatively more recent graduates.

Also, if Im applying for September next year, would b-schools consider my work-ex until then or just till the time I'm applying?

Thanks again for your time.

According to the reporting standards GMAC schools follow (which is most schools), your work experience is the amount you will have at the time you enter business school. So, if you are applying to enter in fall 2011, but applying in fall 2010, you would want to add that year to your current total number of years.

Schools do not have to have a special application or program for college seniors to be willing to consider recent graduates for admission. There are some schools, like the ones you note, that have chosen to implement a special program as a way to target exceptional recent graduates. To know if a school requires a certain amount of work experience, check with the admissions office or on its website. Generally, you will find that most schools now say they "prefer" at least 2 years instead of "require."

Good luck,
Lisa
